September Social Security direct payment worth $967 goes out in 16 days

September Supplemental Security Income payments of up to $967 will be distributed to recipients in 16 days.

While SSI payments are typically sent out at the beginning of each month, September’s payment is sent out on the last Friday before the following month, August 29, because September 1 is a holiday. If the first of the month falls on a holiday or weekend, SSI payments will be issued the previous business day.

Beneficiaries are people with low incomes who are blind, 65 or older, or have another qualifying disability.

The amount received by recipients varies depending on several factors, including the number of people who file. Individuals, for example, can receive up to $967; couples filing jointly can receive up to $1,450; and essential workers who provide necessary care to SSI recipients can receive up to $484.

In January, SSI payments increased by 2.5% to keep up with inflation.

Aside from the requirements for receiving SSI payments, recipients must be US citizens or noncitizens in one of the alien classifications granted by the Department of Homeland Security.

They must also live in one of the 50 states, Washington, D.C., or the Northern Mariana Islands, and they cannot be absent from the United States for more than 30 days in a row.

The Social Security Administration’s website contains a complete calendar of payment dates.
