Iowa Drivers Beware—License Renewal Requirements Just Got an Overhaul

With recent updates to its rules, Iowa’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has made several important changes to how residents renew their driver’s licenses in 2025. Whether you’re renewing for the first time online or updating to a REAL ID, here’s what every Iowa driver needs to know now.

Two Ways to Renew: Online or In-Person

Iowa offers both online and in-person renewal options, but eligibility for online renewal is stricter than ever.

Online Renewal Requirements

To renew online, you MUST:

Be at least 18 years old but younger than 70.

Be an Iowa resident and United States citizen as shown in Iowa DOT records.

Hold a valid, non-commercial Iowa driver’s license or motorcycle license.

Have a license expiring within 180 days or not expired more than one year.

Have previously renewed your current license at a DOT issuance site (you may only renew online every other time).

Have NO changes to your name, birth date, sex, endorsements, or restrictions.

Not require a medical or vision report.

Not have restrictions E, G, I, J, T, Q, or R on the back of your license.

Not have a request pending for re-examination.

Not currently hold a license marked “Valid Without Photo”.

If you need to add a REAL ID or veteran’s designation, you must renew in-person. Also, minors and those with a work permit, instruction permit, or minor’s license can’t renew online.

In-Person Renewal and REAL ID

In-person renewal is always available at DMV and county treasurer locations.
To add the gold star for REAL ID, you must appear in person. Be ready to bring these documents:

Proof of identity (birth certificate or valid passport)

Social Security card or proof of SSN (such as a W-2 or 1099)

Two pieces of mail proving residency

Legal documents for any name changes (e.g., marriage certificate).

Renewal Timing and License Validity

Iowa licenses expire on your birthday, but remain valid for 60 days after.

Renewal is available 30 days before your birthday and up to one year after expiration (beyond that, you’ll need to retake the written and driving tests).

License validity periods range from eight years (age 18-72), decreasing with age—down to two years for drivers 78 and older.

Fees and Processing

Renewals cost $4/year

Motorcycle endorsements: add $2/year

REAL ID upgrade (if done outside renewal time): $10

Online renewals charge a $1.50 processing fee.

Expect your new card to arrive by mail in about 30 days.

Medical/Vision Requirements

Drivers required to submit medical or vision reports (based on age, health, or driving record) cannot renew online and will be instructed to complete renewal in person.

Limited Extensions for Travelers

If you’ll be out of Iowa when your license expires, you can request a temporary extension (up to six months) via mail or fax to the DOT.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Iowa’s revamped renewal system streamlines the process for many drivers, but tightens requirements—especially for online renewal. Be sure to check eligibility before you start the process, gather all needed documents, and act early to avoid frustrations or lapses in your driving privileges.
