Remember me?': Man comes to pub that kicked him out with an 18-inch machete and brass knuckles, tries to kill patron who evicted him, cops say

A North Carolina man is accused of being kicked out of a bar and returning 30 minutes later with a “large machete” and a pair of brass knuckles, which he used to attempt to kill a patron who got him kicked out, police say.

According to online records, Matthew King, 39, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury in connection with the Aug. 9 incident.

According to King’s arrest affidavit, he allegedly got into a “verbal altercation” with another man inside The Public House at 300 S Brevard St. in Uptown Charlotte around 2 a.m. before being kicked out by employees when the dispute “became physical,” according to police.

“Approximately 30 minutes later, King returned to the bar armed with pair of brass knuckles and large machete style blade approximately 18 inches in length,” according to the statement of belief. According to the document, “King approached [the victim] from behind and stated’remember me?'” “[King] attempted to strike [the victim] in the head with the brass knuckles, then swung the machete from overhead towards [the victim’s] head.”

The man being attacked told authorities that he was sliced open by King’s machete, resulting in a “large laceration” while attempting to block his blows with one of his hands. According to cops, he and several witnesses allegedly beat King to the ground and “disarmed” him.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for surgery because of his injuries. Another man who was with him and attempting to stop the violence sustained a minor laceration to his right thigh while disarming King, according to police.

When the cops arrived, King was allegedly discovered “covered in blood” outside The Public House, alongside his victim. According to the affidavit, he allegedly still carried the machete and brass knuckles.

“Multiple witnesses remained on scene and provided written statements to officers which corroborated the victims’ stories,” according to the declaration.

King was treated for injuries sustained during the incident before being arrested and booked into Mecklenburg County Jail. His next court date is still pending.
