Northwest Kansas Weather Alert: Dense Fog Threatens Morning Commute Through 11 A.M. Monday

Colby, Kansas – Drivers in northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska are being urged to exercise caution as dense fog is expected to reduce visibility to near a quarter-mile across the region until 11 a.m. CDT Monday. The National Weather Service in Goodland has issued a Dense Fog Advisory, impacting several counties in both states.

The advisory covers areas from Cheyenne and Rawlins counties in Kansas, extending through Thomas, Sheridan, and Graham counties, and moving northward into Red Willow and Hitchcock counties in Nebraska. Cities including Colby, McCook, Oakley, and Atwood are anticipated to experience the most persistent low visibility.

Roadways such as Interstate 70, U.S. 83, and U.S. 36 are expected to be particularly hazardous for drivers, with significantly reduced visibility creating dangerous travel conditions. Local law enforcement has issued guidance urging motorists to slow down, keep their headlights on low beam, and increase following distances to prevent accidents in the foggy conditions.

While the fog event is expected to persist through mid-morning, it should gradually lift as the day progresses. Travelers heading out early are encouraged to delay their trips if possible or allow for extra time on the road to account for the challenging conditions.

Motorists are also advised to remain alert, as additional advisories may be issued if visibility worsens beyond the morning hours. Drivers are encouraged to stay informed about local weather updates and adjust travel plans accordingly.
