The most important food assistance program in the United States, known as SNAP, updates the amounts it distributes to millions of families every year.
This program, known as “food stamps,” aims to ensure that low-income households have access to nutritious food.
In September 2025, beneficiary families will receive amounts that vary according to the number of household members and the level of income reported.
What is the SNAP program and who qualifies?
The SNAP program is a federal program administered by the USDA that assists low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities.
To qualify, applicants must meet the following basic requirements:
Have income within the limits set by the federal government.
Be a U.S. citizen or meet the eligible noncitizen criteria.
Reside in the state where assistance is requested.
Each case is evaluated individually, so the amounts may vary.
How much will families receive in September 2025?
The amounts to be delivered in September 2025 follow the maximum benefit table that the USDA adjusts each year based on inflation and food costs. In general, the estimated maximum monthly amounts are:
Single-person household: around $291.
Two-person household: up to $535.
Household of 3 people: about $766.
Household of 4 people: up to $973.
Household of 5 people: approximately $1,155.
Household of 6 people: up to $1,386.
Household of 7 people: around $1,532.
Household of 8 people: up to $1,751.
The benefit can be increased by approximately $219 for each additional household member.
It is important to note that not all families receive the maximum amount, as calculations take into account net income, housing costs, and basic services.
How are SNAP benefits delivered?
The assistance does not come in cash. Each family is given an EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) card, similar to a debit card, that can be used at authorized supermarkets, grocery stores, and some farmers’ markets.
Beneficiaries can use this card to buy fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, cereals, and other healthy-eating staples.
However, alcoholic beverages, cleaning products, and ready-to-eat foods cannot be purchased.
