AirTag leads Laramie County deputies to a drug-dealing bicycle thief

A 48-year-old Cheyenne man is facing charges after Laramie County Sheriff’s deputies allegedly found him with a stolen bicycle and drugs.

According to Sheriff Brian Kozak, deputies were dispatched to a home on Prosser Road early Friday morning, May 30, after “a guy woke up… went outside, and saw that his $1,100 bicycle was missing.”

“One of the first things they checked was the doorbell camera, and they realized that Michael Evans most likely took the bicycle,” Kozak said in his Sheriff’s Update on Monday.

AirTag Leads to Stolen Bicycle, Meth, and Magic Mushrooms

According to Kozak, deputies began looking for Evans, but it wasn’t too difficult because the victim had placed an AirTag on his bicycle, a compact Apple-developed Bluetooth tracking device that helps iPhone users locate lost items.

“The victim was able to drag deputies into the exact location where Mr. Evans was,” Kozak told reporters. “When Evans saw the deputies’ cars in the area he tried to hide behind a bush with the bicycle, but guess what folks, the AirTag works behind the bush.”

“(Deputies) arrested him, gave the bicycle back to the owner, and booked him into the jail, and in his hoodie, he had methamphetamine and some magic mushrooms,” says Kozak. “So, his sweet trip that he had turned out to be not so sweet after all.”

Evans Booked on Felony Theft, Drug Possession Charges

Evans was charged with felony theft, which carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both, as well as two counts of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.

“Mr. Evans … when you get out of jail and you want to continue to use magic mushrooms, you know Denver has decriminalized magic mushrooms,” according to Kozak. “So, go there, and I would recommend you get a job and pay for your stuff instead of taking other people’s stuff.”
