Marshfield man convicted of killing roommate begins 25-year jail sentence

MARSHFIELD, Wis. – A 38-year-old man convicted of murdering his roommate and disposing of her body more than an hour away has been transferred to the Dodge Correctional Institution to begin his 25-year prison sentence.

Deyvin Castro Gutierrez agreed to the terms of a plea deal last month. He admitted to second-degree intentional homicide. Following his release from prison, he will serve 20 years of extended supervision.

According to investigators, on November 7, 2024, Castro Gutierrez reported not seeing his roommate since November 3. That day, Price County investigators responded to a report of a fire near Whitby Road in Hackett Township.

Authorities made a shocking discovery with the help of the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation, locating the body of a woman wrapped in blankets. Prosecutors said Castro Gutierrez set fire to the woman’s body after discarding it.

On November 8, 2024, detectives discovered that the woman was Castro Gutierrez’s friend and roommate, Blanca Jesenia Hernandez Portocarrero, 28.

Castro GutiƩrrez was interviewed three days later. According to investigators, he admitted to hitting the woman in the neck and placing his arm across her throat until she stopped breathing.

That’s when they claim he wrapped her in a blanket and tied it with zip ties. According to court documents, he put the woman in his car and drove nearly 70 miles to Price County. The body was found around 9 p.m. on November 3.

Castro Gutierrez had been held on a $10 million cash bond prior to his sentencing.

The probable cause statement did not disclose a motive.

He will receive credit for the 281 days he has already spent in custody.
