GILLETTE, Wyo. — A 27-year-old Gillette man died after being hit by a vehicle late Monday night.
According to the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred at 11:36 p.m. on Highway 59 near mile marker 106.
The man was identified as 27-year-old Abraham I. Martinez. Deputies stated that after speaking with a witness and the driver, they discovered Martinez had been in an argument and had gone for a walk.
According to Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds, he called for a ride home shortly before being struck.
The driver of a Ford F-350, whose identity has not been released by law enforcement, told deputies that he was driving north when he swerved to avoid something on the road that he initially mistook for a deer.
He stated that after noticing his passenger-side mirror was damaged, he turned back and saw Martinez, at which point he called 911.
Sheriff’s deputies and the Gillette Police Department responded to the scene. Martinez received CPR from emergency medical personnel and the Campbell County Fire Department, but he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol and Campbell County Coroner Paul Wallem are looking into the collision.
