A new name is being sought for Laramie County Community College

The Laramie County Community College Board of Trustees voted this week to change the college’s name, though no new name has yet been chosen.

According to a news release from the LCCC. According to the news release: “At the Sept. 17 board meeting, the LCCC Board of Trustees voted to formally adopt an intent to change the college’s name and directed President Dr. Joe Schaffer to lead the process of identifying a new name and developing a timeline for implementing the change.”

According to the release, the decision was made after more than two years of research into the issue. According to the release, Carnegie and Epicosity tested the current name through focus groups, brand awareness surveys, and public input in Wyoming, northern Colorado, and neighboring states.

Why Change The Name?

The findings of that study revealed that people, particularly those outside of Wyoming, were perplexed about the college’s current name and location.

The release says Many respondents indicated  a new name could improve location clarity, broaden appeal and better reflect LCCC’s evolving role in workforce training, academic offerings, and campus environment.

“LCCC has earned a reputation for excellence, innovation and student success,” said Dr. Joe Schaffer, LCCC president. “But we have also heard – loud and clear – that our name sometimes gets in the way of people understanding who we are and where we are. By moving forward with a name change, we are building on our strengths and positioning the College to pull from a broader market to serve the next generation of students and employers.”

The release says one of the goals is to become the best-known college within a 350-mile radius of Cheyenne.

The next step in the process will be what the release calls “an inclusive process to identify options for names.”
