SHERIDAN, Wyo. — A Wyoming man died Sunday morning after driving his motorcycle through an intersection and into a walled-off wooded area in Sheridan. The driver did not wear a helmet.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol investigation, which was later published by the Wyoming Department of Transportation, Jamie Chapman, 39, was driving south on Illinois Street in Sheridan around 2:28 a.m. Sunday.

He followed the street at a high speed until it intersected with Montana Street. The road abruptly ends and continues a few feet to the west, leaving a T-shaped intersection. When Chapman came to this point on the road, he reportedly made no effort to slow down or turn.

Instead, he drove right over the curb and sidewalk, into a low retaining wall and some shrubbery. The bike continued until it collided with a tree and came to an uncontrolled stop.

When the Sheridan Police Department responded to the incident, officers discovered no evidence that Chapman was wearing a helmet. The WHP concluded that speed and driver inattention may have contributed to Chapman’s death.

Other potential causes, such as road conditions and weather, do not appear to have contributed to the incident.

By September 22, 2025, there had been 87 reported road-related deaths in Wyoming, making it deadlier than 2021 and 2024.
