GILLETTE, Wyo. — The Campbell County School District 1 Board of Trustees has unanimously agreed to compensate armed employees who work as educators, though the specific form of payment has yet to be determined. The decision came after a discussion about how to pay employees while protecting their identities.
Board members expressed concern that a stipend appearing in public records could endanger armed educators. Alternatives were discussed, such as compensating employees for expenses such as ammunition or paying employees for training that takes place outside of their regular working hours.
A board member stated that certified teachers are typically paid $30 per hour for summer professional work, which could serve as a benchmark for compensation.
The Wyoming Department of Education has allocated $480,000 over the biennium to districts to cover costs associated with armed educator programs. While reimbursement is possible for expenses outlined in district policy, the state will ultimately determine which costs are necessary.
The issue will now be referred to the district’s policy committee, which will develop a proposal with specific details. That proposal will go back to the full board for a final vote.
Academic improvement
The board also received an update highlighting steady academic improvement and student well-being initiatives.
WY-TOPP scores showed growth in 12 of 19 areas, with math as a consistent strength. The district will focus on improving English language arts.
ACT scores remained steady, with gains in science and reading.
Three elementary schools received the top “Exceeding Expectations” rating from the state.
The district’s four-year graduation rate for the class of 2024 exceeded the state average, with ninth-grade credit attainment up over 7%.
The report also highlighted the district’s commitment to student well-being, which includes a “Positive Social Learning Campaign” and monthly support for approximately 300 students through the Kid Clinic.
The board also unanimously approved the superintendent’s nomination of administrative assistant Tracy Peterson for the Wyoming School Board Association’s Outstanding Service Award, as well as recognizing the Campbell County High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams for winning the state championship and finishing second, respectively.
