Thunderstorms Cause Heavy Rain and Strong Winds in Jasper and Newton Counties

On Sunday evening, a severe thunderstorm moved through Jasper and Newton Counties, bringing heavy winds and rain from the northwest to the southeast. The storm started around 8:00 p.m. and caused a significant amount of disruption across the area.

Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

The storm brought almost 2.5 inches of rain in a very short time, which led to significant flooding. Water backed up on several roads, almost shutting down a section of Highway 96, just in front of W.C. Tractor. The heavy rain caused serious concerns for local drivers as water levels quickly rose in the area.

Power Outages and Service Interruptions

As a result of the storm, many areas north of Jasper experienced power outages. However, the City of Jasper’s Electrical Service was able to keep the power running in most parts of town. A few isolated areas were affected due to limbs falling on power lines, but these were resolved fairly quickly.

Emergency Calls During the Storm

During the storm, emergency services were kept busy. At the intersection of Recreational Road 255 and Farm to Market Road 1007, firemen and other emergency crews responded to a report that a man had been hit by a car and was lying beside the road. However, it was later discovered that the man had actually slipped and fallen due to the rain, and there was no serious accident.

Incident at Walmart Store

As the storm passed, a strange incident was reported at the Walmart Store on Highway 190. Police were called after a man attempted to force a shopping buggy through a glass door. It was later revealed that the man was upset because the east side doors of the store had already been closed for the night. By the time police arrived, the man had left, and no arrest was made.

Tree Fallen on 1st Street

Finally, a tree was blown down onto 1st Street between Houston and College Streets by strong winds. The city workers quickly cleared the debris, and the road was reopened without further delay.

While the thunderstorm caused temporary disruptions across Jasper and Newton Counties, the quick response from emergency services and local workers helped keep the situation under control. Though the storm brought flooding, power outages, and some unusual incidents, it could have been much worse if not for their efforts.
