Tennessee Weather Alert: Dense Fog Reduces Visibility to 1/4 Mile Until 8 A.M. Tuesday

Nashville, Tenn. – Drivers in Middle Tennessee are being urged to take caution early Tuesday as dense fog is reducing visibility to a quarter-mile or less, making travel conditions hazardous.

The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for all of Middle Tennessee, including areas from Clarksville to Crossville. The advisory will remain in effect until 8 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, covering major routes such as I-40 and I-65, as well as metro areas including Nashville, Murfreesboro, and Columbia.

Travel Advisory Details

Motorists are advised to expect significantly reduced visibility, especially in low-lying areas and rural regions. To ensure safety, drivers should slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase their following distance. Emergency officials are recommending that non-essential travel be delayed until after 8 a.m. if possible, to avoid the most dangerous conditions.

Cities such as Gallatin, Lebanon, and Cookeville are expected to experience thick fog through sunrise. This poor visibility could cause disruptions to school traffic, early freight routes, and travel across the Cumberland Plateau and nearby valleys.

Road Conditions and Monitoring

While no major road closures have been reported as of midnight, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is actively monitoring conditions. Drivers are encouraged to stay updated through local traffic alerts and apps.

Visibility is expected to improve after 6 a.m. on Tuesday as the fog begins to lift. However, travelers are urged to remain cautious during the morning hours.
