New Mexico Flood Watch: Flash Flood Risk in Ruidoso and Hermits Peak Burn Scar Zones

Residents living near burn scar zones in northern and southern New Mexico should be prepared for flash flooding on Tuesday afternoon, as storms are expected to bring heavy rain to areas already vulnerable to runoff. This includes regions like Ruidoso and the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon burn scar.

Flood Watch Issued for Several New Mexico Areas

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flood Watch for several areas, including the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, South Central Mountains, East Slopes, and Northeast Highlands, lasting from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. MDT Tuesday. The storm may bring rainfall of up to 0.75 inches per hour, raising the risk of flash flooding, particularly in areas where the ground is already saturated.

Areas at Risk for Flash Flooding

The main areas of concern are those downstream from the 2022 Hermits Peak Calf Canyon burn scar and the recent South Fork Fire scar near Ruidoso. The soil in these regions remains unstable due to the past fires, making it more likely that heavy rain will cause flash flooding.

Rivers, streams, and creek beds could rise rapidly, turning low-water crossings and rural roads into dangerous, impassable paths. Riverbanks may also collapse with little warning.

Safety Tips for Residents and Travelers

Emergency officials recommend staying away from creek beds, unstable slopes, and areas prone to flooding. It’s important to keep cell phones charged and have an evacuation plan ready in case conditions worsen. Storms will build over higher elevations before moving southeast throughout the afternoon, so it’s essential to stay updated on the weather and remain cautious.

Flash Flood Warnings could follow quickly, so residents should avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. Stay alert to protect yourself and your property.
