Planning something special this Father’s Day weekend in eastern Kentucky? Be ready to make a few changes, as rain and thunderstorms are expected from Friday to Monday, with a high chance of heavy downpours and flash flooding.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, KY says scattered storms will begin Friday afternoon and could become stronger by the evening. Storm chances remain high through Sunday, with some areas seeing up to half an inch of rain — or even more during thunderstorms.
What to Expect Over the Weekend
The worst weather is expected on Friday and Saturday, when strong winds and heavy rainfall are most likely. People living in low-lying areas, or near creeks and streams, should be very careful, as there’s a chance of flash flooding.
Roads like US-23 and KY-80 could become dangerous due to water accumulation. Drivers should be alert and avoid any flooded roads. It’s also a good idea to have alternate travel routes in case of flooding.
Rain Likely Through Father’s Day
By Saturday night, the weather might settle a bit, but Sunday morning will still see light showers. The rain is expected to pick up again by afternoon, so if you have any outdoor Father’s Day celebrations, be sure to plan some indoor activities too.
The weather on Monday will be similar, with 80% chances of rain and storms, especially in the afternoon and evening.
While no official flood watches are out yet, they could be announced soon. Stay updated with your local weather alerts and do not try to drive through flooded roads.
Weather Outlook Improves Midweek
Rainy weather will likely continue through Tuesday and Wednesday, but by midweek, the sky is expected to become partly sunny. So, if you’re tired of the rain, just hold on a few more days — better weather is on the way!
