A major heat wave is set to impact the Midwest starting Friday, with high temperatures and humidity levels pushing heat index values over 100°F across Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The National Weather Service has issued a heat alert, marking this event as the first major heatwave of the season.
Extreme Heat Conditions Across the Midwest
According to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, the heat wave will bring Major to Extreme heat risks from Friday through Sunday.
The core of the heat will initially affect the Plains and central Midwest, before spreading eastward early next week. Temperatures are expected to climb well into the 90s during the day, with high humidity levels pushing the feels-like temperatures above 100°F in many areas.
Hazards of the Heat Wave
Overnight lows will only cool down to the mid-70s, offering little relief from the oppressive heat. This can be especially dangerous for those without access to air conditioning or cooling systems.
The combination of high temperatures and elevated humidity increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
By Monday, June 24, the heat wave is expected to continue and spread further east. The Weather Prediction Center has identified a High Risk of extreme heat (greater than 60%) in parts of the Ohio Valley and the Mid-Atlantic. Cities like St. Louis, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago will likely experience sustained high heat through at least the start of the week.
Health Precautions
Health officials are urging residents to take the following precautions to stay safe during the heat wave:
Limit outdoor activities, particularly during the hottest part of the day (from noon to 4 p.m.).
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
Check on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and children.
If possible, use air conditioning or seek out local cooling centers to stay cool.
Recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses, including dizziness, nausea, and confusion, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms occur.
The Midwest is bracing for a dangerous heat wave, with temperatures soaring over 100°F and humidity pushing the heat index even higher. Residents of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and surrounding areas are urged to take precautions throughout the weekend and into early next week as the heat continues to build.
