Repeat DWI Offender Charged After Deadly Andover Crash and Attempted Escape

Man with Prior DWI Charged in Deadly Andover Crash After Allegedly Fleeing the Scene

A man is facing serious charges after allegedly driving drunk and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash in Andover last week.

According to a criminal complaint filed Monday in Anoka County, deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash around 5:44 p.m. on May 16 near 165th Avenue NW and 7th Avenue NW.

When they arrived, they found a woman trapped and unresponsive inside a Kia Soul. Emergency crews worked to free her from the wreckage, but she was later pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital. Authorities identified the victim as 74-year-old Alice Marie Stack of Andover.

The second vehicle involved—a 2019 Ford F-350—was discovered nearby, but the driver was nowhere to be found. Witnesses told deputies they saw a red-haired man in a black t-shirt stumbling away from the truck and running into a wooded area.

Shortly after, deputies located a man matching that description walking close to the scene. He was identified as 48-year-old Aloysius Kenneth Johnson, also of Andover. Deputies noted that he smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech, unsteady balance, and dried blood on his face, hands, and arms. He was taken into custody and checked for injuries.

When deputies spoke to him, Johnson allegedly asked what had happened. After being told there had been a crash, he denied being the driver. His wife later arrived at the scene and identified the Ford truck as his. She explained that the two had been at the SRO Bar in Oak Grove earlier, where Johnson had been drinking vodka sodas. She said she drove ahead of him on the way home and believed he tried to beat her home by taking a different route.

After being read his rights, Johnson admitted in an interview that he had consumed three or four vodka sodas and confirmed he was the only one in the truck. He claimed he didn’t remember the crash but did recall being in a field and running. He said he was on his way back to the crash site when deputies found him. A blood sample was taken at the scene under a warrant.

The crash also caused damage to multiple road signs and a light pole. Due to the severity of the wreck, rescue crews couldn’t immediately remove Stack from her vehicle.

Court documents show that Johnson has a previous DWI conviction from 1998 in Anoka County. He remains in custody. If convicted of the felony charge of criminal vehicular homicide, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
