Rapid City, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across western South Dakota through 9 p.m. Sunday, bringing the risk of large hail, damaging winds, and lightning from the Black Hills to the Badlands.

Storm Watch Issued for Eight Counties

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Bennett, Custer, Fall River, Jackson, Lawrence, Meade, Oglala Lakota, and Pennington counties.

The storms are expected to intensify by late afternoon, with strong storm cells likely to form along U.S. Highway 385 and Interstate 90, particularly near Rapid City and Sturgis.

Storm Impact and Safety Precautions

Residents in Hot Springs, Wall, and Pine Ridge should prepare for sudden downpours and wind gusts that may exceed 60 mph. Power outages and minor tree damage are possible.

Those who are outdoors, especially campers and hikers in the Black Hills, are urged to seek shelter well before the storms arrive. Avoid using metal objects and stay indoors during lightning for safety.

This is the first widespread severe weather event of the season in late June, impacting the region as summer tourism is underway. Officials advise checking weather alerts before traveling or planning outdoor events this evening.
