CASPER, Wyo. — According to the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office, two people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the legs following an altercation among campers at Alcova Lake last weekend.
The injuries were serious but not life-threatening, NCSO spokesperson Kiera Hett told Oil City News on Monday.
Around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, deputies responded to a report of shots fired in an unincorporated camping area between Black Beach Campground and Cottonwood Campground.
“Through their investigation, deputies determined that an argument occurred within a group of campers who were attempting to prevent an intoxicated male from driving,” he said.
According to reports, the intoxicated man produced a rifle and pointed it at another man. In response, the other male discharged his handgun. Several shots were fired. Hett reported that both the intoxicated man and a female bystander were struck in the leg.
Both were taken to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
“The situation was quickly contained, and deputies determined there was no ongoing threat to the public in the area,” he said. “The male who discharged his firearm was detained for further investigation and later released. “Investigators have spoken with everyone involved,” Hett said.
On Monday, the sheriff’s office continued to investigate the incident.
