Massachusetts Weather Alert Flash Flood Watch for Boston, Worcester, and Cape Areas

Thunderstorms sweeping across southern New England on Tuesday afternoon are expected to bring heavy rain, potentially leading to flash flooding in urban areas like Boston, Worcester, and Cape Cod. A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for portions of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, effective from 2 p.m. Tuesday through 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Areas Affected by the Flash Flood Watch

The Flash Flood Watch includes parts of south-central and southeast Massachusetts, including Boston, Worcester, New Bedford, Brockton, and Fall River. Additionally, communities in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and along the coast are also at risk for flash flooding.

What to Expect

Meteorologists warn that rain could fall at rates of one to two inches per hour, which may overwhelm city drainage systems. This could lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along major roadways.

The National Weather Service advises that key routes, such as I-95, I-91, and I-93, may experience sudden water buildup, creating dangerous travel conditions for evening commuters.

In addition to the heavy rain, flash floods may lead to brief but intense downpours, street closures, and power outages in some regions. Urban areas like Boston, Providence, and Hartford are expected to face the greatest threat, with localized flooding most likely.

Safety Tips During Flash Flood Watch

If you are driving, avoid flooded roads and never attempt to drive through standing water, as it can be deeper than it appears and may cause your vehicle to stall or be swept away. Emergency officials strongly advise residents to stay off the roads in areas with heavy rainfall and flash flooding.

For those living in flood-prone areas, especially in basements and low-lying regions, it’s essential to move valuables to higher ground and make sure sump pumps are working correctly. Be prepared for street closures, power outages, and disruptions to travel as the storms intensify.

Flood Watch Duration

The Flood Watch will remain in effect until 2 a.m. Wednesday, though the National Weather Service warns that additional advisories may be issued if thunderstorms persist into the night.
