TWO women were killed and several others injured in a horrific double shooting in Kentucky.
At approximately 11:35 a.m., a gunman opened fire on a state trooper at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington before proceeding to a church shooting spree.
The shooter then fled to the Richmond Road Baptist Church, where they carried out a second horrific shooting, killing several people.
“I’m heartbroken to share that the shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington has taken the lives of two people,” Governor Andy Beshear said in a statement on X.
“Other injuries- including a Kentucky State Police trooper from the initial stop — are being treated at a nearby hospital.”
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said the suspect was stopped by a state trooper near the local airport.
He then launched a frenzied attack, shooting and injuring the officer.
Moments later, he carjacked a vehicle, fled to Richmond Road Baptist Church, and began shooting at people inside.
Two women, aged 72 and 32, were killed, while two male parishioners were injured, according to police.
According to Weathers, the suspect may have known the people he attacked at the church.
The Lexington Police Department confirmed that the suspected gunman was killed at the church after killing two women.
According to Weathers, preliminary information suggests that the suspect may have known some of the people at the church.
“Kentucky State Police is aware of a trooper-involved shooting incident that occurred on July 13, 2025, at 11:36 a.m. in Fayette County,” the officers wrote in X.
“The suspect shot a trooper and then fled the scene, eventually arriving at the Richmond Road Baptist Church, where KSP and the Lexington Police Department apprehended the suspect.
“At this time, we can confirm that the trooper is receiving medical attention.”
EMS rushed to the scene, where there were several victims.
The condition and exact number of those injured are currently unknown.
“KSP will provide more information as it becomes available,” the police statement read.
An investigation is currently underway that is affecting Terminal Drive, so passengers using the airport are being directed to alternative parking areas.
However, all flights are operating as planned.
“Kelley and I are praying for all the victims, the injured trooper, and their families,” Senator Rand Paul wrote on X.
“We are grateful to the brave first responders. This type of violence is unacceptable.”
He added that he was “saddened to hear about the tragic shootings”.
Meanwhile, Governor Beshear requested prayers for those who were injured.
“Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let’s give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police,” according to the governor.
“Kentucky, let’s stand strong together and support our Lexington neighbors during this difficult time,” she said.
