Florida & Gulf Coast Alert Tropical System Brings Heavy Rain, Thunderstorm Risk & Flood Threat Through Mid-Week

Lake Charles, LA – A tropical system developing in the northeastern Gulf is expected to bring heavy rainfall, a risk of thunderstorms, and localized flash flooding across Florida and the north-central Gulf Coast through mid-week. Residents in southern Louisiana and southeast Texas are also facing a slight risk of severe thunderstorms, with potential damaging wind gusts.

According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a low-pressure system near the southeastern U.S. coast is predicted to move across Florida and into the northeastern Gulf by Tuesday. Although the chances of tropical development remain low at 20% over the next seven days, heavy downpours are still likely.

Areas Affected and Storm Risks

Louisiana cities such as Lake Charles, Lafayette, and Port Arthur are under a “slight” risk for severe thunderstorms (level 2 of 5), which could bring wind gusts over 58 mph. The highest risk is expected in central and eastern Texas, spreading eastward into southwestern Louisiana. Residents are urged to secure any loose outdoor items and stay prepared for sudden downpours that could disrupt activities.

Localized flash flooding remains the main concern, particularly for Florida, as well as areas of Louisiana and Texas. Even if tropical development doesn’t occur, this system will still bring significant rainfall that could cause flash floods. Officials recommend avoiding flooded roadways and charging electronic devices in preparation for potential power outages.

What to Do and How to Prepare

Travelers and residents in these areas should stay updated on weather alerts and have a plan in place for unexpected weather events. It’s important to secure outdoor items, monitor for severe thunderstorm warnings, and avoid unnecessary travel through flooded areas.

Make sure your devices are charged in case of power interruptions, and stay informed on the latest advisories as the system moves westward through the region.

Warnings and advisories will likely continue through mid-week, so residents should remain cautious and ready to adjust plans as needed.
