Delaware Weather: Thunderstorms Threaten Wilmington Thursday, July 17th — Heat Advisory in Effect Until 7 p.m.

Wilmington, Delaware – Steamy heat and strong storms are about to collide in Delaware as a Heat Advisory takes effect Thursday, July 17th, threatening Wilmington and surrounding highways.

Residents can expect sweltering humidity with heat index values soaring near 100°F, plus a rising risk of afternoon thunderstorms capable of flooding streets and slowing traffic along I-95 and I-495.

According to the National Weather Service, the Heat Advisory remains in place for Wilmington and New Castle County from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 17th. Thunderstorms may break out after 11 a.m., bringing brief, intense downpours and gusty winds.

The combination of heat and storms could knock out power and make driving hazardous, especially on main arteries like I-95, US-13, and local roads around Wilmington.

Heat and Storm Risk

Daytime highs will hit 93°F, with the oppressive heat and humidity making it feel even hotter. If you need to be outdoors, drink plenty of water, limit strenuous activities, and check on elderly neighbors.

Officials urge everyone to avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles, and to seek cooling centers if your home lacks air conditioning.

Friday will bring some relief, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 88°F. However, more storms are possible late Friday night into early Saturday.

The unsettled summer pattern continues this weekend, with scattered thunderstorms Saturday and a chance for showers each day through Tuesday, July 22nd. Rain may be heavy at times, and minor flooding is possible in poorly drained areas.

Warnings remain in effect for Thursday, with additional advisories possible. Stay tuned for updates.
