Missouri Drivers Beware—License Renewal Requirements Just Got an Overhaul

Missouri drivers are facing their most significant driver’s license renewal update in years. With federal REAL ID enforcement looming, expanded document requirements, and new eligibility for online and remote renewal, every motorist—especially those nearing renewal—should understand how the system works in 2025 and beyond.

What Changed for Missouri License Renewal

1. REAL ID: Deadline in Sight

Beginning May 7, 2025, you must have a REAL ID-compliant Missouri driver’s license or ID card (or another form of federally accepted ID) to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities. Standard Missouri licenses without the REAL ID star will no longer be accepted for these purposes. You are not required to obtain a REAL ID for everyday driving, but if you want to travel by air or enter certain buildings, you must proactively upgrade.

2. Documentation Requirements Tightened

All drivers must provide proof of identitylawful statusSocial Security number, and Missouri residency to complete a renewal. If you’re upgrading to REAL ID for the first time, you need to bring additional documents—such as a certified birth certificate or valid passport, plus proof of residence like utility bills or bank statements.

If you have previously provided, and the DMV has scanned copies of, your documentation, you may self-certify your address if there has been no change, simplifying your renewal. If your residence or name has changed, additional documents are required.

3. Remote and Online Renewal Now Broader—But With Limits

Missouri now allows remote (online) renewal for eligible drivers between the ages of 21 and 49. To use this system:

You must have a verified U.S. citizenship document on file.

Prior renewal must have been done in person.

Only one online or mail renewal is permitted between in-person applications.

A valid vision test taken within the last 12 months must be reported.

Some groups (such as non-U.S. citizens or those with expired licenses) must still renew in person.

If your last renewal was remote, you’re required to appear in person for your next one. Online renewal is not available for those under 21 or over 49; older drivers will need in-person renewal as usual.

4. Vision and Road Sign Recognition Tests

All applicants must pass a vision test—either at the licensing office or by submitting proof of a recent exam. You will also need to pass a road sign recognition test. If your license has been expired more than 184 days (six months), you must take the written and driving tests again.

5. Fees and Cycle Changes

Renewal fees remain based on age:

$10 for under 21 or 70 and older (valid 3 years)

$20 for ages 21-69 (valid 6 years)

Payable by cash, check, money order, or card (which incurs a processing fee).

6. Military Members and Out-of-State Missourians

Military members and their dependents outside Missouri can now renew by email under new rules.

What Drivers Need to Do

Allow time for processing—mail delivery can take 7–10 business days.

Don’t wait until the last minute to upgrade to REAL ID—processing just before the May deadline could disrupt travel plans.

Check your eligibility for remote renewal on the official Missouri DMV site or with your local license office.

Be prepared with current documents—especially for name or address changes.

Missouri’s major license renewal overhaul means a bit more paperwork for many, but it promises more convenience for eligible online renewals and brings the state into compliance with new national standards. All drivers should review their options well before renewal time to avoid headaches—and ensure uninterrupted driving and travel in 2025.
