Seven Decades of Memories and Milestones Coming to a Close in Wyoming

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — After seven decades serving the community, Walter’s Hardware on Coal Street in Wilkes-Barre is preparing to close its doors.

The beloved store’s closure follows the unexpected passing of its 72-year-old owner, Walter Letanski, last December. Walter and his wife Karen ran the hardware store together, creating a local hub not only for repair and fix-it supplies but also for hobbyists of all ages who enjoyed the store’s engaging and nostalgic displays.

Karen Letanski has now made the heartfelt decision to retire, marking the end of an era for this cherished Wyoming County fixture.

Chris Paul, a loyal customer for 15 years, shared his thoughts: “When I moved out here, Walter’s was the place I found everything I needed nearby. I developed a great relationship with Walter—God rest his soul—and Karen too. Those are the memories I’ll cherish. I’m really going to miss it.”

Walter’s Hardware plans to remain open for a few more weeks to sell off inventory before closing permanently, leaving behind a rich legacy in the Wyoming community and beyond.
