Alabama Drivers Beware—License Renewal Requirements Just Got an Overhaul

Recent changes to Alabama’s driver license renewal process have introduced new requirements, important deadlines, and technological updates. Here’s what every Alabama driver needs to know heading into 2025.

Key Renewal Changes for 2025

1. Four-Year Renewal Cycle (No Renewal Notices Sent in Advance)

Alabama driver licenses must be renewed every four years.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) does not send renewal notices before your license expires. You are responsible for tracking your expiration date.

2. Documentation Requirements

Three documents required for standard renewal:

Current Alabama driver license

Proof of identity (e.g., passport, birth certificate)

Proof of Alabama residency (utility bill, lease, mortgage, etc.)

Documents must be valid and current—no photocopies allowed.

3. Renewal Methods

MethodKey RequirementsWhen to Use
OnlineCan be used every 8 years (every other cycle). Not allowed if a new picture, address, or name change is required. Credit/debit payment required. Generates a 30-day temporary license.Only for standard renewals without major changes
By MailReserved for out-of-state residents, military, or students. Proof of eligibility (e.g., student/military ID) required. Must pay via money order.Temporarily out of state
In PersonAny Alabama DMV or license office. Required for those needing new photos or major information changes. All payment methods accepted except checks.Name or address change, non-eligible for online

4. Renew Early—New Grace Periods

You may renew up to 6 months before your license expires.

If you miss your expiration, there is a 60-day grace period for renewal without penalty.

180 days after expiration: Still able to renew, but you may be charged a late fee.

More than 3 years expired: Must retake the written, vision, and road tests.

5. STAR ID Requirement for Air Travel

Effective May 7, 2025, you will need a STAR ID (Alabama’s REAL ID) or a valid passport to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.

STAR IDs are only issued at ALEA Driver License Exam Offices—not county offices.

Non-REAL ID licenses after this date will be marked “Not for Federal Identification”.

Special Notes for Commercial Drivers

CDL Holders: Starting June 23, 2025, DOT medical certifications must be submitted electronically via authorized channels—paper cards will no longer be accepted.

Modernized CDL Skills Test: Launches July 1, 2025. Substantial changes coming to test structure, but the road test remains the same.

What Alabama Drivers Should Do Now

  • Check your license expiration date and mark your calendar.
  • Gather required documentation in advance to avoid delays.
  • Plan ahead for STAR ID if flying or entering federal facilities after May 7, 2025.
  • Verify your eligibility for online renewal—online is easiest, but restrictions apply.
  • Out of state? Prepare to renew by mail if needed, but gather documentation first.

Don’t get caught off guard by the new requirements—renew early, keep your documents up to date, and make sure you’re compliant with the latest regulations for driving and air travel in Alabama.
