Gillette Man Captured Hiding in Field Following Alleged Burglary at Construction Site

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A 20-something Gillette man was arrested earlier this week for allegedly breaking into a construction site and attempting to hide in a nearby field. Dylan Hogan has been charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, and criminal trespass in connection with the incident on July 23.

The incident began just after 3 a.m., when a security alarm was activated at a residential apartment complex under construction. A monitoring company notified the Gillette Police Department, which responded quickly to the incident on Tanner Drive. Officers established a perimeter, and one used a drone to search the area.

Approximately 75 yards away, the drone operator noticed a man lying flat in a field, apparently attempting to avoid detection. Officers approached and detained the man, who introduced himself as Hogan. He was discovered wearing a black hoodie, jeans, gloves, and carrying a flashlight and a knife.

Suspect’s Story: Walk for $200, Friend Fled

In a statement to police, Hogan claimed that a friend woke him up and promised him $200 to go for a walk. They drove to the complex in a friend’s truck, parked near a church, and then walked there. Hogan claimed that his friend, who was carrying two bags, handed him a backpack without explaining the reason for the visit.

After law enforcement arrived, Hogan stated that his friend fled the scene, leaving him behind. Police later discovered a black backpack containing bolt cutters, which Hogan denied knowledge of. When asked what they were doing on the site, Hogan reportedly said, “Probably wasn’t good.”

Legal Proceedings Underway

Hogan is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. He could face up to ten years in prison for burglary, three years for tool possession, and six years for trespassing, in addition to potential fines. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 29th, and a $10,000 surety bond has been established.
