Three people were killed and several injured when a gunman opened fire outside a casino in Reno, Nevada, early Monday before being apprehended.
According to Reno police, the shooting occurred around 7:25 a.m. in the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino’s valet area and, later, parking lot. Officers arrived on the scene within minutes of the shooting and exchanged gunfire with the shooter.
Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance expressed her condolences to the victims and their families, as well as the entire community, during a press conference on Monday. “Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure.”
One victim died in the valet area, while a passing motorist was shot in the casino’s parking lot. A third victim died from their injuries while receiving treatment at Renown Regional Medical Center.
Reno Police Department spokesperson Chris Johnson confirmed that police shot the adult male suspect. A security officer also shot at the gunman.
Police said two victims and the shooter were in critical condition as of Monday afternoon. Another victim has been treated and released.
Officials have yet to reveal the identities of the suspected shooter, those killed, and those injured in the shooting.
According to Reno and Sparks police, the suspect was a white male who was carrying “multiple firearm magazines” at the time of the shooting.
Police said Monday they had no reason to believe there was a link between the suspect and the victims.
The motive for the violence has not been determined.
“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community,” Devon Reese, a Reno City Council member, wrote on social media.
“Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation.”
The Sparks Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, with support from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
The Independent has contacted the agencies investigating the shooting to obtain additional information.
The shooting occurred on the same day that a gunman was accused of shooting and killing four people in a Manhattan office tower.
