A 19-year-old has been detained in connection with the June 29 shooting in Riverton

(Riverton, WY) – According to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office call log from yesterday, a “stab/gunshot” call was made at 12:58 PM on June 29, with the reporting party relaying that a subject had been “shot in the leg after an altercation.”

The log goes on to say that the “suspect fled from the scene” and was still at large at the time.

FCSO Undersheriff Mike Hutchison announced today, July 1, that the suspect was arrested yesterday and identified as 19-year-old Evan Smith.

“On June 29, 2025, at around 1:00 pm, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a shooting that had just occurred on Snowberry Lane, north of Riverton in the Gardens North trailer park,” according to today’s release from Hutchison. “FCSO Deputies responded to the area with assistance from Riverton Police Department Officers.”

“When law enforcement officers arrived, they discovered that both the suspect and the victim had left the scene. After speaking with witnesses to the shooting, a suspect was identified as 19-year-old Evan Smith.

The victim (a 40-year-old Riverton man) was later found at Riverton Hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower leg.”

The release goes on to say that Smith was apprehended by Riverton Police Department officers yesterday, June 30, and that he is now in custody with “multiple charges pending.”

County 10 will provide further information on the case as it becomes available.
