GILLETTE, Wyo. — A wanted fugitive was apprehended in Gillette earlier this month as he attempted to flee trial for multiple felonies, including grand theft and possession of a controlled substance. Court documents show that he was extradited back to South Dakota on June 20.

Campbell County law enforcement became aware of defendant Cade Scholten’s attempt to flee punishment for multiple crimes allegedly committed around June 3 in Lawrence County, South Dakota, thanks to a fugitive warrant issued by the sheriff’s office there.

The charges include first-degree burglary, grand theft, second-degree robbery, third-degree attempted burglary, two counts of intentional property damage, possession of a controlled weapon, and multiple possession of a controlled substance charges.

Many of the alleged crimes, such as grand theft and first-degree burglary, are considered felonies in the United States.

On June 12, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department apprehended Scholten after serving him with a fugitive warrant. He was quickly assigned a July 11 court date in Campbell County, but was served with an extradition request on June 20. He is now being transported back to Spearfish, South Dakota, as a prisoner, and will face trial soon.

One of the rights granted to defendants is the right to a probable cause hearing. This hearing will determine whether Scholten was the person charged with the crimes, whether he likely committed the crimes, and, most importantly, whether he fled from justice.

Scholten may face harsher punishment if convicted due to his status as a fugitive. This includes increased penalties and stricter bond and release conditions.
