A Mississippi man who told 911 dispatchers he shot his 31-year-old wife is now facing prison time for her murder.
Tony Morris, 67, was found guilty by a jury on Wednesday of the first-degree murder of his wife, Kathleen Morris, 64.
According to local ABC affiliate WAPT, Hinds County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the couple’s home in Terry, Mississippi, around 7:15 a.m. on August 26, 2024, and discovered Kathleen Morris dead from a gunshot wound to the upper body.
Her estranged husband, Tony Morris, called 911 to report the shooting.
WAPT spoke with Tony Morris’ brother at the scene, who confirmed that the couple was in the process of divorcing. Tyree Jones, Hinds County Sheriff, confirmed that Tony Morris “did call into dispatch and state that he shot his wife.”
Tony Morris was taken into custody and identified as the sole suspect.
While no specific reason was given for the shooting, Hinds County District Attorney Jodi E. Owens II stated, “A single moment of rage ended a 31-year marriage and claimed a life. Kathleen Morris died as a result of an unnecessary escalation.
Owens added, “This case demonstrates how quickly violence can overtake reason, and why prevention is just as important as prosecution. As a community, we must provide a safe space for people to seek assistance and support systems that respond before violence occurs.”
Tony Morris was convicted of deliberate design murder and sentenced to life in prison by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
