Anoka Makes History: City Breaks Ground on First-Ever Cannabis Dispensary

Anoka Breaks Ground on City-Run Cannabis Dispensary

ANOKA, Minn. — The City of Anoka is officially moving forward with plans to open its own cannabis dispensary, breaking ground on the new facility this Thursday.

Anoka is among several Minnesota cities that have applied for a municipal cannabis license. The upcoming dispensary will be located near the city’s liquor store, which is also city-owned.

Kevin Morelli, Anoka’s liquor operations manager, previously spoke with KARE 11 about the project. He explained that profits from cannabis sales will be reinvested into the community—just like revenue from the liquor store.

“It could be used for parks, added to the general fund, or wherever the city council decides,” Morelli said. “Like our liquor operation, the main goals are to manage recreational marijuana sales within city limits and to generate revenue.”

Under current regulations from the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management, Anoka will be allowed to have one privately-owned dispensary in addition to the city-run location.
