California Air Quality Alert Windblown Dust Raises Health Risks in Coachella Valley Until 8 a.m. Tuesday

Palm Springs, California – Unhealthy air quality due to windblown dust is continuing to affect the Coachella Valley, prompting an Air Quality Alert that will remain in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, wind-driven dust has pushed particulate pollution levels into the “unhealthy” range across areas such as Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and other nearby communities.

This is particularly hazardous for people with heart or lung conditions, children, older adults, and outdoor workers, who face the greatest risks from the pollution.

Air Quality Risks and Recommendations

Air quality is expected to remain poor throughout the day, especially in areas like San Gorgonio Pass near Banning that are highly exposed. Residents are urged to stay indoors, keep windows closed, and use air conditioning or air purifiers if available to reduce exposure.

Outdoor physical activity should be minimized, particularly when the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches the red or purple zones, which indicate unhealthy air quality.

Additional Safety Measures

Drivers are encouraged to limit trips and slow down on unpaved roads to prevent creating more dust. Local agencies advise against using swamp coolers, burning candles, or operating gas-powered equipment during this alert to avoid worsening air quality.

This alert marks the second major dust-related advisory for the region this month, and further warnings may be issued if conditions deteriorate.
