Indianapolis, Indiana – Heavy rain and thunderstorms have drenched central Indiana Tuesday morning, causing minor flooding and leaving some roads covered with water.
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis reports that 1 to 2 inches of rain have already fallen in southern and central counties, with another 1 to 2 inches possible as additional showers move northward through the early afternoon.
Areas along and south of Bloomington and Columbus, including parts of I-69 and State Road 37, are at the highest risk for water-covered roads and minor flooding.
Flooding Risks and Safety Concerns
Emergency officials are urging drivers to avoid flooded streets, as even shallow water can be dangerous. The “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” warning is in effect for Bartholomew, Jackson, and Lawrence counties, where minor flooding has already been reported. Additionally, power outages and brief road closures could occur if heavy rain continues, especially in low-lying areas.
What to Do to Stay Safe
Residents are advised to charge their devices, monitor weather updates, and limit non-essential travel until the threat passes. Today’s heavy rain follows a wet start to July, which has already saturated the ground and increased the risk of quick runoff.
Minor flood advisories are likely to remain in effect through early afternoon, with additional updates possible if the rain intensifies.
