Colorado Weather Alert Severe Storms and 60 mph Winds Expected in Southeast Plains

A hot and dry weather pattern will dominate much of Colorado on Tuesday, but residents in the southeast Plains should be prepared for severe thunderstorms by late afternoon. The National Weather Service in Pueblo warns of strong wind gusts up to 60 mph and the possibility of hail as storms develop across the region.

Areas Affected by Severe Storms

Most of Colorado will experience isolated to scattered thunderstorms, but the greatest risk for severe weather will be southeast of Lamar and La Junta. This includes areas such as Las Animas, Baca, Prowers, and Bent counties. The storms are expected to develop between 2 and 8 p.m., with strong winds and the threat of quarter-sized hail.

What to Expect from the Storms

Tuesday’s weather will bring high temperatures ranging from the upper 80s to near 100°F across much of the state, including Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Alamosa. However, the southeast Plains will see the most dangerous conditions, with wind gusts that could potentially down trees, power lines, and cause other hazards. Hail may reach the size of quarters, which can damage crops, vehicles, and buildings.

Travel Safety Tips

Travelers along Highway 50 and U.S. 287 should be prepared for sudden weather changes, including low visibility, rain, and possible road debris. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and stay updated on weather conditions, especially during the afternoon hours when storms are expected to develop.

What to Do During the Storm

If you’re in an area under threat of severe storms, it’s important to take precautions:

Secure outdoor objects that could be blown away by strong winds.

Charge your cell phones in case of power outages.

Review your emergency plans in advance, so you know what to do if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

If you hear thunder, seek shelter indoors immediately. Avoid windows and stay away from electrical appliances.

Storms Expected to Weaken Overnight

While the storms are expected to weaken overnight, isolated strong thunderstorms could redevelop on Wednesday. Keep an eye on weather updates, as more alerts and warnings may be issued if conditions remain severe.
