Pueblo, Colorado – Southern Colorado is in for a turbulent afternoon and evening as scattered thunderstorms are set to bring gusty winds, small hail, and heavy rainfall that could disrupt travel and outdoor activities. The National Weather Service has issued an alert for the region, urging residents to take precautions as storms move through.
Thunderstorm Forecast for Tuesday Afternoon and Evening
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, thunderstorms are expected to track across southern Colorado through 9 p.m. Tuesday. These storms could produce gusty winds of up to 55 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and heavy downpours. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, there is still a risk for sudden, dangerous winds and localized flooding.
Areas Under Threat
Cities from Pueblo and Trinidad to Walsenburg and Lamar are at risk, with thunderstorms likely to affect major highways, including I-25, U.S. 50, and U.S. 160. Travel along these routes may become hazardous due to reduced visibility and possible flooding. Boaters should also take extra caution—if thunder is heard, they should seek safe harbor immediately as conditions on lakes can deteriorate quickly during a thunderstorm.
Safety Precautions
Residents are urged to stay indoors at the first sign of thunder. It is also advised to charge devices in case of power outages and to prepare for the possibility of delays or disruptions in travel. This will be the first widespread thunderstorm event of the month for southern Colorado, following a mostly dry start to July.
When Will the Storms End?
The thunderstorms are expected to subside after 9 p.m., but the National Weather Service warns that additional advisories could be issued if new storms develop overnight.
