Millions of SSI recipients in the United States have a reason to mark their calendars. Although it is customary to receive only one payment per month, in August 2025 there will be an exception: Two deposits will be made.
This unusual situation has raised expectations and confusion, prompting many to question whether it is a bonus or a mistake. However, the reason is much simpler and is related to a unique feature of the federal calendar that the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses on an annual basis.
Why will there be another SSI payment in August?
This second payment in August does not provide additional funds for beneficiaries. In fact, the deposit for the month of September is moved forward.
The SSA rule states that if the first day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, such as Labor Day, the payment is moved to the previous month’s last business day. As a result, the second August deposit (scheduled for August 29) is simply the September payment, which arrived early, leaving that month with no deposit.
What are the SSI payments in August?
August 1: August’s regular SSI payment arrived as scheduled.
August 29: The payment due on September 1 is deposited early, to avoid closure due to the holiday.
What is the SSI payment amount?
$967 per month for eligible people.
$1,450 a month for eligible couples.
