A COLLEGE football star was found dead in a car after being shot in Memphis over the weekend.
Corey Adams, an 18-year-old Ole Miss freshman, was the only one killed in a Saturday shooting that injured four others, according to police.
Adams, of New Orleans, was discovered outside a Cordova home and given life-saving measures by authorities, but they were ineffective.
“When deputies arrived at the intersection of Forest Hill-Irene and Walnut Grove, they stopped a vehicle, finding an adult male gunshot victim,” the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office wrote on X.
“Upon arrival at Fern Glade Cove, deputies found multiple shell casings and learned that four adult males arrived by personal vehicles to area hospitals with gunshot wounds.”
The other four sustained non-critical injuries.
Police have also confirmed that the incident is an active homicide investigation, and they are looking for suspects.
Adams, one of the nation’s top defensive line recruits, posted an Instagram photo of himself at practice in April, preparing for the upcoming season.
Ole Miss is expected to play its first game on August 30, just weeks away.
The university mourned the incoming freshman on social media, stating that they were “heartbroken.”
“We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee,” the football team’s statement read.
“While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The team then stated that they would “not be commenting further at this time” due to respect for the family.
Users flooded the post with comments, expressing their sympathy for the young player.
“A mother and father awoke to this tragic news today and will now have to navigate life without their son. “As a father, I can’t imagine,” one user wrote.
“Prayers for the Adams family.” I’m praying for comfort at this time. “Tell someone you love them today.”
Ole Miss’s statement regarding the player’s death
Ole Miss made an X post that read:
“We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on our team, died last night in Cordova, Tennessee. While our program tries to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his family during this extremely difficult time.
We will refrain from making any further comments at this time in order to respect his family. We ask that the Ole Miss community keep Corey in their thoughts and respect everyone’s privacy.
Ole Miss and the sheriff’s office did not immediately return requests for comment.
A neighbor told WATN-TV that the shooting occurred while the house was hosting a party.
“Things got out of hand,” the man explained. “My first thought was somebody had thrown out a long row of firecrackers.”
“I’m sorry for him,” the neighbor added. “I mean, he had huge promise, great accolades.”
“That cannot be your first response is to pull a gun and shoot somebody.”
A witness told WREG that when police arrived, everyone had left.
“I was watching TV in my living room right here when I heard loud shots. “Big shots,” he said.
“I thought there was a big attack going on. I told my kids to lie on the ground and turn off all the lights. Definitely, there was a lot of fear.”
Adams’ high school football team, the Edna Karr Cougars, described him as a “friend, brother, son, student, and all-around great young man.”
“We never question God, but this is one we just don’t understand,” they wrote on Facebook, according to reports.
Earlier this month, Mycheal Edwards-Wallace, an 18-year-old college football star set to start this season at Newberry College, was killed in a mass shooting in South Carolina.
