As usual in January, CSSHA celebrated by having a New Year Birthday Party for Humans and Horses at their January CSSHA/CWC Practice and Jackpot. The Cowboy State Stock Horse Association also celebrates 20 years as an active club in 2023. Our association is known for hosting many cow horse and stock horse events in Wyoming year-round.


CSSHA Winter Practices and Jackpots
CSSHA 2023 Winter Use of Central Wyoming College’s Arena. The January 14 & 15 CSSHA/CWCC Sorting Winter Practice and Jackpot was held in Riverton, WY. We want to thank everyone that helped make it a successful weekend, because it takes a lot of volunteers to make these happen.
Thank you Jim and Sharon Horn for being in charge, with lots of help from Scott Ratliff, Leane Linnell, Laurie Gardner, Marty Kennison, Sarah Lowe, Kent Parker and Ross and Zack Thornock. And thanks for all the volunteers who pitched in to clean up the arena, set up and take down panels and were just good hands. Congratulations to our Open and Youth class winners in the Sunday Jackpot. First place won a buckle for each division, plus payouts for several places.


Placings for Youth Division are:

2nd Place-Raven Vukich, with Zach Thornock coming in a very close 3rd.

Upcoming Events
See you on February 4 & 5, 2023 for Ranch Roping clinic/practice and jackpot! This is a slow breakaway roping from the herd. It’s great for ranch ropers and beginners alike! The final winter weekend will begin with open riding at CWC from 9AM to 10AM. Instruction and practice will be 10AM to 4 PM on Saturdays. Practice will begin at 10 AM on Sundays. The Sunday Jackpot, which begins at 1 PM, is optional for participants, but what a great way to test what you have learned. A buckle will be awarded for each month’s jackpot high score in both youth and adult divisions. To enter the jackpot, you must attend the clinic either Saturday or Sunday or both days that weekend. February 4-5 $35.00/day or $55.00/two Sunday: Morning Practice. Afternoon Ranch Roping Jackpot $20 entry
Income from this series allows CSSHA to provide two $500 scholarships to CWC equine and rodeo students in the fall. Thanks to everyone who helps at these practices and jackpots. Special thanks to CWC Equine program, students and staff for supporting CSSHA to use their arena this winter.
CSSHA/LOTRA Monthly Winter Cattle Practice in Lander, WY
CSSHA is holding Sunday afternoon practices with cattle once a month at the Lander Old Timers Rodeo Association (LOTRA) indoor arena this winter. Take advantage of practicing with cattle and a CowTrac flag for herdwork and cow horse experience from 1:00-4:00 Sunday afternoons on the Sundays listed below. (Sorry, but no roping.) If you are a member of LOTRA and CSSHA, the practice is free. If you are not a member of the LOTRA arena, it’s only $30 per person for all afternoon to practice with cattle! (No practice if it’s zero degrees or lower during the day!)

Central Wyoming College Winter Ranch Horse Versatility Series, Riverton, WY The CWC Ranch Horse Team and Equine Studies Students are hosting a winter Ranch Horse Versatility Series! Their series consists of four practices and shows. The first two were held November 12 & 13 and December 3 &4. The next dates are: January 28-29, 2023 and February 11-12, 2023
The CWC Ranch Horse Team students will host practice sessions on each Saturday before the show on Sunday. Youth and adult divisions are Ranch Trail, Ranch Riding, Reining, and Working Cow Horse. Competitors can enter one class or all classes in their division and have a chance to win Ranch Horse All Around Awards. The CWC students like to give equal awards to youth and adults in an effort to help keep our community active in a lifestyle involving horses.
