Dodge City, Kansas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to impact central Kansas on Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the potential for wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail as large as 2 inches, particularly northeast of Dodge City.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, these storms will form along and behind an advancing cold front on Tuesday, June 17.
A large area of central and south-central Kansas, including Great Bend, Hutchinson, Salina, and Newton, is at risk for damaging hail and strong winds. The highest risk of hail larger than 2 inches will be near the I-135 corridor, northeast of Dodge City.
Risk of Tornadoes and Travel Impacts
Some of the storms may also produce brief tornadoes, especially in areas south of the cold front. Cities like Russell and McPherson fall within the enhanced risk area for severe weather. Travel along U.S. Routes 50 and 56 may be impacted by low visibility and potential wind damage to vehicles.
