A 2-year-old girl was discovered roaming her Texas neighborhood alone and wearing nothing but a dirty diaper, and her parents are now facing felony charges.
On Sunday, Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Alexandrea Prewett, 33, and Benito Lopez, 35, after neighbors reported that the couple’s toddler was “running near a busy street before entering a nearby residence.”
Police found the little girl sitting on the sidewalk, and she was described as “extremely dirty, unkempt, and wearing a heavily soiled diaper.”
However, when police entered the home where she lived with her parents, they allegedly discovered an even worse scene.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, deputies entered the home on Eutrophic Circle and discovered “filthy hoarding conditions.”
Prewett was inside and told police that she was the girl’s mother. She was detained while police summoned Lopez, who arrived home and was also detained.
According to local NBC affiliate WOAI, the 2-year-old was outside alone when the temperature reached more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Prewett and Lopez were both booked into the Bexar County Jail on charges of endangering children. They posted bond and were released on the same day they were arrested.
According to local ABC affiliate KSAT, the little girl was transported to the hospital after being examined by first responders, and Child Protective Services was notified. Police stated in a Facebook post that she was unharmed.
It is unclear who has custody of the girl right now.
