Forecasters Warn of Fire Risk Amid Red Flag Warning in Eastern Idaho

Dry conditions and an incoming thunderstorm could spark new fires in parts of eastern Idaho, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pocatello to issue a red flag warning for Thursday. This warning highlights the increased risk of wildfires, with thunderstorms, low humidity, and strong winds expected in the region.

Red Flag Warning Details

The red flag warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday due to a combination of conditions that make it easy for new fires to ignite. The forecast includes thunderstorms moving into the area Thursday evening, accompanied by winds expected to range from 25 to 45 mph. These high winds, combined with the dry conditions, increase the likelihood of rapidly spreading fires.

Conditions for Fire Growth

Senior Meteorologist Dawn Harmon from the National Weather Service emphasized that while thunderstorms are expected, the warning is mainly based on current ground conditions, which have been dry enough to fuel potential fires.

The Bureau of Land Management’s Chris Burger pointed out that Southeast Idaho is seeing fuel conditions becoming increasingly dry, which could contribute to rapid fire growth if thunderstorms develop.

Burger also noted that a similar situation occurred during the Garden Creek Fire near Fort Hall, where a passing thunderstorm and strong winds caused the fire to spread quickly, even though a red flag warning was not issued at the time.

Fire Danger This Weekend

As Fourth of July celebrations approach, Chris Burger is reminding people to be extra cautious when recreating outdoors. The weather conditions make it easy for fires to start, and everyone is encouraged to stay vigilant. “It’s not just a firefighter thing. It’s an everybody thing,” said Burger.

How to Stay Safe and Report Fires

The NWS reports that are sent twice a day help firefighters plan for the day’s conditions. However, residents and visitors should stay alert, especially during the Fourth of July weekend, when outdoor activities could increase the chances of accidental fires.

If you see smoke or suspect a fire, report it immediately by calling 911 or the Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center at (208) 524-7600. Prompt reporting helps firefighters respond quickly and effectively.

With a red flag warning in place, the risk of new wildfires is high in eastern Idaho. Dry weather, thunderstorms, and strong winds create the perfect conditions for fires to spread. Residents are urged to remain cautious, especially during outdoor activities, and to report any signs of fire immediately to prevent further damage.
