GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A wave of celebration filled Ottawa Hills High School on Wednesday, May 21, as students, families, and educators came together to honor the Class of 2025. The ceremony was a heartfelt tribute to the achievements of around 75 graduating seniors, who proudly crossed the stage in traditional black caps and gowns.
The gymnasium echoed with joy as families stomped on bleachers and cheered loudly, creating a standing ovation that lasted several minutes. The energy in the room was electric, emphasizing the strong support these students have received on their journey.
“You know where to find us. Don’t be afraid to reach out for support,” said Ottawa Hills Principal Timothy Mabin, offering students a final reminder that their school community will always have their back.
This was the fourth graduation held this week by Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS), with more celebrations still to come. In total, about 750 students across the district are expected to graduate this spring, according to GRPS spokesperson Luke Stier.

Graduation week kicked off with ceremonies at CA Frost Middle High and Union High School on Monday, May 19. Southwest Middle High School followed with its celebration on Tuesday evening, May 20, alongside a joint ceremony for Innovation Central High School and Grand Rapids Montessori.
At Ottawa Hills, valedictorian Charles Curtis and salutatorian Takara Miguel addressed their classmates, sharing messages of gratitude and pride for their collective accomplishments.
Due to rainy weather, both Ottawa Hills and Grand Rapids Public Museum High School held their Wednesday ceremonies indoors at the Ottawa Hills gymnasium at 2055 Rosewood Ave. SE.
Looking ahead, Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy will host its commencement at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at Houseman Field. Later that evening, City High Middle School students will take the stage at 7 p.m. The celebrations will continue next week, with the Grand Rapids Learning Center holding its graduation at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28.
While this event marked a milestone for Michigan’s students, it also echoed celebrations held in schools across the country—from Michigan to states like Wyoming—where tight-knit communities continue to uplift and support their graduates.
