Georgia Drivers Beware—License Renewal Requirements Just Got an Overhaul

What’s Changed for 2025?

Georgia has implemented significant changes to its driver’s license renewal process in 2025, and drivers across the state are feeling the impact. The most notable update is that all drivers seeking to renew or reinstate their license must now do so in person at a Department of Driver Services (DDS) customer service center, at least for their first renewal after the law change.

This overhaul extends the documentation requirements that were previously only mandatory for first-time applicants or those getting a new ID.

New Documentation Requirements

Under the new rules, every applicant—whether renewing or reinstating—must present original or certified copies of several documents in person. These include an original or certified birth certificate, Social Security card, and two documents proving Georgia residency (such as utility bills or bank statements). This requirement is designed to comply with federal REAL ID standards, which are now enforced for both new licenses and renewals.

Online and Mail Renewal Restrictions

Previously, many drivers could renew their license online or by mail, provided they met certain criteria. Now, the new law mandates that the first renewal after the rule change must be completed in person, regardless of eligibility for online renewal in the past. After this initial in-person renewal, drivers may be able to renew online or by mail for subsequent renewals, provided they meet all other requirements.

Impact on Wait Times and Preparation

The new in-person requirement has led to long lines at DDS centers, with some locations reporting hours-long waits as drivers adjust to the updated process.

Many customers have found themselves making multiple trips due to missing or incomplete documentation. State officials recommend arriving early, bringing all required documents, and preparing for extended wait times as the system adapts to the new rules.

Fees and Renewal Cycle

The standard renewal fee remains $32 for in-person renewals and $27 for online renewals (when eligible). Georgia driver’s licenses are valid for up to eight years, and renewals can be initiated up to 150 days before the license expiration date. If your license has expired for more than two years, you will need to retake the vision, knowledge, and road tests.

REAL ID Compliance

All renewed licenses must be REAL ID-compliant, indicated by a gold or black star in the upper right corner of the card. If you already have a REAL ID-compliant license and are not changing your name or other identifying information, you may not need to resubmit documents for future renewals.

Georgia’s new license renewal rules require all drivers to complete their first renewal in person under the updated law, bringing original or certified documents to prove identity, Social Security number, and residency.

The changes are aimed at boosting security and meeting federal standards, but they have also resulted in longer wait times and a greater need for preparation. Drivers should check the DDS website for the latest requirements and ensure they have all necessary documents before heading to a service center
