Here’s who gets Social Security payments this week

The first Social Security payment for the month of August will be sent to recipients this week; however, those who were previously overpaid by the Social Security Administration may receive smaller benefit checks.

This is because the agency intends to begin withholding 50% of benefits from those who have been overpaid but have yet to make repayments.

According to a February 2025 report by the SSA’s Office of the Inspector General, the agency overpaid $13.6 billion in Social Security benefits between fiscal years 2020 and 2023, but the SSA has not stated how many people were overpaid.

According to the report, approximately 75% of the overpayments occurred as a result of beneficiaries failing to successfully report information to the SSA that negatively impacted their benefits. Additional salary or retirement earnings, as well as changes in medical status, such as the end of a disabling condition, were not sent.

Beneficiaries born on the first through tenth of their birth month will receive their monthly Social Security benefits on Wednesday, August 13, according to the SSA’s payment calendar.

When are Social Security payments sent?

Social Security benefits, which are primarily paid to the elderly and retired, are typically paid on Wednesdays.

If a recipient’s birthdate falls between the first and tenth of the month, they will receive payments on the second Wednesday of the payment month, according to the SSA calendar.

According to the SSA payment calendar, recipients born between the 11th and 20th of the month are paid on the third Wednesday, while those born after the 20th receive payments on the fourth Wednesday.
