CalFresh, the state program that administers SNAP benefits in California, provides monthly financial support for food purchases to low-income families.
The amount received by each household varies depending on the number of members and net disposable income, so understanding how these payments are calculated is critical for making the best use of available aid.
How CalFresh benefits are determined
CalFresh benefits are calculated using two main factors: the number of people in the household and monthly net income after allowable deductions. The county Department of Welfare calculates the maximum amount possible based on household size and subtracts 30% of net income.
For example, if a two-person family’s net income is $100, $30 will be deducted from the maximum amount, resulting in a payment of $506 rather than $536.
Maximum monthly amounts by family size
From October 1, 2024, the maximum monthly CalFresh amounts in California are as follows:
- 1 person: $292
- 2 people: $536
- 3 people: $768
- 4 people: $975
- 5 people: $1,158
- 6 people: $1,390
- 7 people: $1,536
- 8 people: $1,756
- For each additional person: +$220
These amounts reflect adjustments to the federal economic food plan, which defines the minimum needed to meet a family’s basic food needs.
Special cases and minimum benefits
Even if a household’s net income is extremely low, they may be eligible for a minimum benefit. If they qualify, one- or two-person households could receive at least $10. In households with three or more people, if the calculation yields a benefit of only $1, it is increased to $2; if it yields $3, $4 is awarded; and so on. However, if a household’s income exceeds 200% of the federal poverty level, it may be denied benefits, even if it meets all other requirements.
Who can receive CalFresh?
CalFresh is available to individuals and families living in California, including the homeless, seniors, and SSI/SSP recipients. You are not required to be married or have children to apply. Furthermore, the program considers people who live together but buy and prepare their own food as separate households.
Permitted uses of SNAP benefits
CalFresh benefits are delivered through an EBT card that can be used at supermarkets, farmers’ markets, and authorized online retailers. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, meats, cereals, and packaged goods can be purchased, but non-food products, alcohol, tobacco, and hot meals prepared on-site are not permitted, except in special circumstances such as for the homeless or elderly.
