Social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook have been buzzing with reports that the Social Security Administration (SSA) will provide a one-time $600 bonus through Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits beginning in July 2025, or, as some now suggest, in September.
But a careful examination of the facts reveals that these promises are based on misunderstandings rather than reality. The SSA has clarified that no such lump-sum payment is planned or approved.
Online misinformation vs. official guidance
Rumors have circulated online that a special $600 payment will be added to SSI checks to help beneficiaries keep up with rising costs.
However, the SSA has categorically rejected these claims. According to The Economic Times, “Social media rumors about a $600 bonus in July Social Security payments are false.” “The Social Security Administration has not approved such payments.”
The confusion appears to stem from the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), which for 2025 is 2.5%.
That equates to a $47 monthly increase for someone receiving $2,000 in benefits, totaling $564 over the course of a year. That does not equate to a one-time $600 payment.

Why this myth keeps circulating
The concept of a “one-time payment” is especially dangerous because it allows scammers to target vulnerable populations.
Some of these fraudulent messages ask recipients to provide personal information such as their Social Security numbers and bank account information in order to receive the alleged bonus.
These scams can have serious repercussions. According to The Sun, in one case, Americans were duped out of over $126.5 million by receiving false $600 Social Security “boost” messages.
The media was advised by officials to “ignore these false reports and not to divulge personal information, as such scams are often attempts to steal identities or money.”
What exactly is happening with SSI payments?
Here’s the truth: the COLA increase for 2025 is already in effect. Benefits for SSI were increased beginning December 31, 2024, for payment in January 2025, with the adjustment included in each monthly check.
The federal maximum SSI monthly payments for 2025 are:
$967 for an individual
$1,450 for a couple
$484 for an essential person
These amounts reflect the 2.5 percent COLA that was applied automatically, no action from beneficiaries was required.
