Wichita, Kansas – Thunderstorms brought heavy rainfall to south-central Kansas on Saturday morning, with more than 2.8 inches of rain recorded in Derby. The storms, which affected communities across Sedgwick and Butler counties, caused brief flooding and saturated fields as the storm system moved northeast through the region.

Widespread Rainfall and Flooding

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the storms intensified before 4 p.m., leading to widespread rainfall totals of more than one inch. Derby saw the most rain, with 2.8 inches recorded, while nearby Rose Hill recorded 2.62 inches, and Mulvane and Augusta saw 2.14 and 1.69 inches, respectively. Wichita Eisenhower Airport registered 1.15 inches of rain.

The heavy downpour caused brief street flooding in low-lying areas, and fields throughout the region became saturated. Communities such as Winfield, Hutchinson, and Coffeyville also reported steady rain as the storm system moved northeast. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and stay alert for hydroplaning risks, especially on highways like I-35 and US-400.
