At the 2025 Wyoming High School Golf State Championships in Douglas, Cody, and Cheyenne, two sophomores, two juniors, and two seniors, respectively, took home individual golf state titles on Saturday. Team-wise, the majority of the favorites also took first place.

Tazlyn Wagner and Trevan Benson of Kemmerer, Addison Bettinger of Buffalo, Tate Nichols of Wheatland, Madison Brown of Evanston, and Carson Moniz of Laramie are your 2025 state champions. Wheatland dominated Class 3A, the Evanston girls and Campbell County boys won Class 4A, and the Thermopolis girls and Sundance boys won Class 2A.

Wagner won the 2A girls’ title by 28 shots, easily winning the title for the second time in a row. For a two-day total of 148, the 15-year-old sophomore shot 73 and 75. Ten Sleep’s Kelsie Griffin finished second at 176. Third place went to Ruth Needham of Thermopolis, who scored 180.

Thermopolis had four golfers finish in the top six, including ties, while the Bobcats won the girls’ team championship by 71 shots. The score for their team was 559. This was the fourth title in the school’s history and the second for the Thermopolis girls in the previous three years.

Benson gave the Rangers a sweeping victory. The sophomore from Kemmerer won by six shots after firing rounds of 77 and 74. 151 was his two-round total. East Lewis of Tongue River finished second at 157. At 162, Colton Gerler of Wright came in third.

With a two-day total of 708, the Sundance boys won the team title by 27 shots. Three of the Bulldogs’ golfers finished in the top ten, and another was in the top fifteen. This is Sundance’s first boys’ golf state championship since 2001 and their second overall.

Wheatland Stands Out in 3A

The Bulldogs had the boys’ champion and the girls’ runner-up, and they won both team titles. Tate Nichols, a junior, took home the 3A individual medal for the second consecutive year. Nichols shot a 69 in the last round to win by nine strokes after falling behind by two shots with a 73 in the first round.

He scored 142 points in two days. He assisted the Bulldogs in winning their seventh school championship and their second consecutive 3A boys’ title. Wheatland won by eight shots after shooting a 622-team total. Individually, William Oland of Lander finished third at 152, followed by Jacob Miller of Wheatland in second place at 151.

Addison Bettinger, a junior from Buffalo, defeated several opponents to win the 3A girls’ title. She fired 154 rounds, including 76 and 78 rounds. By seven shots, Bettinger prevailed. Wheatland native Haylie Nelson finished second at 161.

Maddie Brace of Douglas, the reigning champion, came in third at 163. Wheatland won the team championship at 511, 16 shots ahead of Cody, with Nelson and two other players in the top eight. In school history, the Bulldogs have won four girls’ golf titles, all of which have occurred in the last five seasons.

Favorites Won the 4A Honors

Madison Brown, a senior from Evanston, defeated multiple opponents to win the 2025 4A girls’ championship. With a total score of 159, she won first place by three strokes after shooting rounds of 80 and 79. The tournament’s only round with a score below 80 was her final round.

Central’s Bella Beach finished second at 162, while Kelly Walsh’s Khloe Romo finished third at 165. Evanston was able to repeat as the girls’ team champions thanks to Brown’s effort. In the history of the school, it was their fourth title. Two Red Devils players were tied for tenth place. They had a four-shot victory with a team score of 511.

Carson Moniz, a senior at Laramie, held off the field following rounds of 69 and 70 for the boys’ team. He had a two-shot victory with a two-day total of 139. After Ted Piekenbrock in 1967 and Jackson McClaren in 2020, he is the third Laramie-born golfer to win it all.

Cade Peterson of Campbell County finished second, two shots behind Moniz, and Jaxon Burr, a teammate, finished third, three shots behind him. Under Peterson and Burr’s leadership, the Camels won the team championship again. In the school’s history, this was Campbell County’s sixth boys’ golf championship. With a team score of 590, they prevailed by 10 shots.

The high school golf season for 2025 is over. Early April marks the beginning of the spring season, which will last until mid-May.
