Louisiana officials arrest girlfriend of an escaped inmate for conspiracy in a coordinated jailbreak effort

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced the arrest of a former Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO) employee believed to be Derrick Groves’ girlfriend, who is still on the run.

Murrill announced in a press release that Darriana Burton, 28, a former OPSO employee, was arrested on Monday for allegedly assisting Derrick Groves in his escape from the facility. Officials believe Burton is Groves’ girlfriend.

On May 27, Burton was issued an arrest warrant on the charge of conspiracy to commit simple escape.

She was apprehended by the United States Marshalls Service, which found her in New Orleans on Monday. According to the arrest affidavit, the woman allegedly coordinated Groves’ contact with individuals outside the jail and communicated information about the escape.

Murrill’s office confirmed that the couple had been in a “again, off-again relationship” for three years and are currently dating.

Burton worked for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office from August 2022 to March 2023. Murrill predicts 2023.

Officials said she was arrested and charged in 2023 with allegedly bringing contraband into a jail and malfeasance, but the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office denied the charges.

“We will continue to pursue anyone and everyone who has aided and abetted these criminals. We will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you to the full extent of the law. I’d like to thank the US Marshals Service for executing our warrant for this woman.

We will arrest all aiders and abettors, and we will eventually get Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves back to prison where they belong,” Murrill said.
